Wayang Golek – Javanese Puppets

Hand-carved and painted in the traditional style, these puppets reflect centuries of Javanese storytelling. Used in performances of Hindu epics like the Ramayana (the timeless battle between good and evil) each costume detail conveys the character’s role – virtue, anger, or deceit. .Controlled with rods, the puppeteer (dalang) animates the characters to the rhythm of a live gamelan orchestra during all night performances that mark important life events.

Wayang Golek is recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral Heritage of Humanity.
