Textiles can hold a wealth of history – social, economic and geographic – of the society that is its source.

The first textiles were mostly created just for warmth or protection using materials locally available; often then religion imposed standards of modesty or propriety; but then the expansion in the range of populations’ power and wealth created a demand for the development of techniques, the pursuit of rarity and innovation in designs, to fuel the desire for visible ostentation.
